| My second favorite film out of the entire Showa series. Why? Because it has my top five favorite kaiju in it plus six more! Godzilla... Anguirus... Rodan... Gorosaurus... King Ghidorah! Not to mention a great storyline, cool city destruction, and one huge, epic kaiju battle royal! OK, now to take a breath and get on with the synopsis of the film... | |

It is the year 1999 and all of the Earth’s monsters have been collected and are living together on Ogasawara Island. The monsters are kept on the island by special devices such as magnetic walls and metal cylinders that spray out gas that repels the monster. All of this is controlled from a base deep below the island’s surface. All was going just fine on Ogasawara Island until the command center and the surface of the island are covered in a strange knockout gas that takes out both the kaiju and the humans on the island. A few days later, the kaiju from the island begin to appear in major cities throughout the world... Godzilla in New York, Rodan in Moscow, Mothra in Peking, Gorosaurus in Paris, Manda in London, etc. Only Tokyo being spared from these vicious attacks. The spaceship Moonlight SY-3 is recalled from the moon to investigate the island, but the crew finds the base surprisingly operational and aliens called the Kilaaks say that they are taking over the world with the planet's monsters, who are under their control. The SY-3 crew then does battle with the humans under the control of the Kilaaks and rescue the base commander, who is still under Kilaak control, before fleeing for Japan. However, when they return to Japan, the base commander refuses to cooperate with the authorities and commits suicide. During an autopsy on the commander, a Kilaak control device is found implanted in the man’s skull and leads to the discovery of control transmitters hidden all over the world.
With attention diverted away from Japan by monster attacks around the world, the Kilaaks set up a base in Izu, an area near Mount Fuji. Tokyo is then completely assaulted by the kaiju Godzilla, Rodan, Manda, and Mothra, totally catching the Japanese off guard and the monsters soon level the city. The Japanese locate the Izu base and attempt to retaliate, but are defeated by both Godzilla and Anguirus. However, when it is discovered that the mind-control signals are coming from another base on the moon, the SY-3 is sent to end the signals by destroying the control transmitter, which they do and take out the Kilaak base as well. In doing this, the crew discovers that the Kilaaks revert to small, metallic worm-like creatures without a high temperature environment to survive in. The Kilaak control system is then taken back to Earth, now placing the humans in control of the monsters. Then all the Ogasawaran kaiju gather at Mount Fuji to attack the Kilaak base... Godzilla, Anguirus, Gorosaurus, Rodan, Mothra, Varan, Baragon, Manda, Kumonga, and Minya all stand ready for battle, but the Kilaaks bring in an unexpected weapon... King Ghidorah! The three-headed space kaiju, however, is quickly beaten back by the combined power of the Earth monsters and is ultimately killed by their combined strength. But when all seems said and done, a burning monster called the “Fire Dragon” suddenly appears in the sky, attacking Rodan and then destroying the command center on Ogasawara Island. But sensing the enemy Kilaaks near by, Godzilla destroys their base and the Kilaaks are reduced to their rock-like forms. The SY-3 then engages the burning monster in battle and quickly destroys the monster, which is actually a Kilaak saucer. The monsters then return to Ogasawara Island to leave in peace... for now. |
