| Wow... That's all I can say about this film. This is definately the cream of the crop for the Alternate Reality series thus far and Director Mazaaki Tezuka's best Godzilla film yet! I saw this film at the Pickwick theater at G-Fest XI in 2004 and was totally blown away by every aspect of the film. The fight was incredible and went on forever, plus it was great to see Hiroshi Koizumi return to the Godzilla series. Seeing a Godzilla film on the big screen is definately the way to enjoy the King of the Monsters in all his glory! Well, enough gushing, onto the synopsis... | |

It has been one year since the battle between Godzilla and MechaGodzilla. MechaGodzilla is still under going extensive repairs in the maintenance dock of the Japan Counter-Xenomorph Self Defense Force (J.X.S.D.F) base in Hachioji. In the battle with Godzilla, the Absolute Zero Cannon was damaged and his right arm was severed. At the same time, Godzilla awakens at the bottom of the ocean, having survived the battle with MechaGodzilla. Meanwhile, in far away Hawaii, an unidentified flying object is spotted on the radar of the resident Air Force base, flying at high speed toward Japan’s capital, Tokyo. Jets are sent out from the Hawaiian Air Force base to investigate the UFO and they report that a giant body is flying through the clouds and that they can hear strange singing voices. Suddenly, the object disappears from radar somewhere over the Ogasawara atoll, but satellites have taken a photo of the UFO, which appears to show the wings of a giant moth!
Later, in Karuizawa in the west of Tokyo, Dr. Shinichi Chujo is vacationing at his country home with his grandson Shun and his nephew Yoshito, a member of MechaGodzilla’s engineer crew. The three are enjoying themselves when the earth suddenly begins to shake and Shinichi is called by strange female voices, it’s the Shobijin, Mothra’s Twin Fairies. The Shobijin have come to see Dr. Shinichi Chujo, who they know as a friend from back in 1961 when Mothra attacked Japan, and ask him to tell the Japanese Government their request, they wish the bones of Godzilla to be returned to the sea. They explain that mankind has made a big mistake by making a fighting tool out of the bones and that man must not touch the soul of a dead. Yoshito is skeptical, but the Shobijin continue to explain that if mankind does not return Godzilla’s bones to the sea, Mothra will have to turn against them. The earth then begins to shake again and Mothra takes to the sky outside of the Chujo’s window, with the Shobijin in tow, leaving only a small stone plate with Mothra´s mark on it behind. Back in Tokyo, a press conference is held to announce that MechaGodzilla’s repairs are nearly finished. During the conference, a reporter asks whether or not it is true that the bones of the original Godzilla that attacked Japan in 1954 are built into MechaGodzilla’s form. To answer that, a diagram is shown with a CGI rendition of Godzilla’s skeleton under the exterior armor, now completed with a mechanical arm instead of its right skeleton arm, which was lost in the battle with Godzilla. Later, a celebration is held for three MechaGodzilla Squad members who are transferred to America to study advanced military strategy: Kenji Sekine, Akane Yashiro, and Susumu Hayama. Yoshito Chujo is there and talks with his friend Azusa Kisaragi, who is now the new pilot for the Shirasagi transports (MechaGodzilla’s flight jets). Azusa introduces Yoshito to Kyosuke Akiba, the new operator of MechaGodzilla, but they don't exactly hit it off. Later, Yoshito goes to MechaGodzilla’s dock and thinks about the words of the Shobijin. But someone has followed him: Akane Yashiro. Before walking away, she tells him that maybe MechaGodzilla doesn't want to fight anymore and that he is lucky to be in repair now, so he can rest. The next day, Dr. Shinichi Chujo visits an old friend, Japanese Prime Minister Igarashi. Shinichi tells him about the request of the Shobijin and Igarashi admits that he has already thought about abandoning the MechaGodzilla project, but his task is to protect Japan from Godzilla and therefore he can't do it. Later, at Kujukuri Beach in the Chiba prefecture, the dead body of a huge creature has washed ashore. It is classified as Kameba, a giant mutation of a snapping turtle that had been discovered on Sergio Island 34 years before. It seems like the fatal wounds on its neck have been caused by giant claws, like those of Godzilla. Meanwhile, far off on the floor of the Pacific Ocean, an American nuclear submarine begins to receive strange signals from its sonar. Something very large is approaching the sub very fast and as the sonar signals are identified as the beats of a giant heart, it's too late. Godzilla attacks the sub and crushes its hull in order to absorb the radioactivity that lies within. Back in the MechaGodzilla dock, Japanese scientist Kanno tells a group of government officials that a diamond of immense size would be needed to power the Absolute Zero Cannon, or else it would never function again, so they instead replace the cannon with the Triple Hyper Maser Cannon. Later, Yoshito Chujo is ordered to the Ministry of Defense, where he is asked if whether or not he has actually seen Mothra in Japan. Further more, they ask whether it's true that Mothra would fight with Godzilla instead of MechaGodzilla. At the same time, the form of a giant creature is spotted on radar in the Pacific Ocean and Godzilla's dorsal fins break through the surface of the water. The J.X.S.D.F. sends out their sea forces to attack the Monster King with heavy missiles, but they are not able to alter Godzilla’s course, which takes him straight to Tokyo! As the news of Godzilla impending landing in Tokyo is broadcasted on TV, the last preparations are made to dispatch MechaGodzilla at the J.X.S.D.F. base. Meanwhile, the self-defense forces move off to battle Godzilla in Shinagawa, which is still in reconstruction after Godzilla’s previous attack. While Shinagawa is being evacuated and the people flee, Maser Tanks take up position around Tokyo Bay. Suddenly, explosions of underwater mines alert the military to Godzilla’s arrival and the King of the Monsters soon breaks through the ocean surface. However, something is different, a large scare now covers Godzilla’s chest, thanks to the Absolute Zero Cannon. From units located all around Tokyo Bay, dozens of missiles are shot at the Monster King’s chest, now considered to be his weak point. However, Godzilla is not effected and quickly destroys all that oppose him. With no obstacle left, Godzilla marches onto Tokyo. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Igarashi is watching the whole situation on a monitor and mumbles that MechaGodzilla’s existence must be what is calling Godzilla to Japan. At the same time, Shinichi is searching for his missing grandson Shun and finally finds him in a schoolyard, busy taking chairs and tables out of the building into the yard. Then, a news helicopter flies overhead and spots them. But from the sky, they see a mark built of tables and chairs – Mothra’s symbol, Shun is calling to Mothra for help. Suddenly, the mark is covered by a huge shadow as Mothra finally appears to defend Japan from Godzilla. Mothra soars through the streets of Shinagawa at full speed and hits the surprised Godzilla in the head. Godzilla bellows in defiance as Mothra begins to create strong winds with her wings, kicking up dust and blinding the King of the Monsters. While Godzilla is distracted by this, Mothra zooms around and attacks from behind, grabbing Godzilla by his neck and dragging him through the streets until she finally lets go and Godzilla plows into the surrounding buildings. However, the Monster King soon rises and bites down on one of Mothra’s six legs, throwing her into a building and ripping the leg out. Mothra regains her composure and flies over Godzilla, releasing her reflective scales from her wings. At the same time, the Shobijin start to sing Mothra's song, as a giant egg can be seen resting inside a volcanic crater. While Mothra continues her attack, Godzilla prepares to fight back with his radioactive heat ray, but the reflective scales contain the ray and throw it back at Godzilla, resulting into a huge explosion that rocks the area. As the smoke clears, Godzilla is left standing, not hurt whatsoever. Watching the fight on his monitor, Prime Minister Igarashi finally decides to dispatch MechaGodzilla to fight with Mothra against Godzilla and the Shirasagi transport jets soon take to the sky with the robotic kaiju in tow. Meanwhile, the battle between Godzilla and Mothra continues. Mothra flies around Godzilla, trying to evade his radioactive heat ray, one evade she makes actually causes Godzilla’s ray to strike Tokyo Tower, destroying it utterly. This is close to where Shinichi and Shun are watching the battle and they run for cover to avoid the falling debris. After missing his target once again, Godzilla takes careful aim at Mothra and strikes one of her wings, sending the giant moth falling to the ground. Godzilla then moves in to deliver the final blow, but laser beams suddenly strike him from behind. MechaGodzilla has arrived. Godzilla turns and faces his robotic counterpart, but MechaGodzilla quickly fires off dozens of missiles at the Monster King, to which Godzilla replies with his radioactive heat ray. MechaGodzilla quickly evades the attack, taking cover behind a tall building and returning fire with his missiles. Angered by this, Godzilla fires his heat ray right through the building and hits MechaGodzilla square in the chest, knocking him to the ground. Godzilla then moves in to finish him off, but Mothra suddenly reappears and slams into Godzilla, knocking the Monster King to the ground, but not before he could fire off a blast of his heat ray, which strikes Mothra and she slowly glides to the ground. Meanwhile, at Himagojima, the giant egg cracks and breaks open and not one, but two Mothra larva emerge from the egg and head for Tokyo while in Tokyo, Yoshito is driving in a jeep through the streets of the Japanese Capital, searching for his uncle and nephew. Not knowing where to find them, the Mothra symbol he has suddenly begins to glow and shows him where to go. Back at the battle, MechaGodzilla is able to get back to his feet thanks to the interference by Mothra. MechaGodzilla then proceeds to dump his arm cannons while the downward boosters of the back unit take a horizontal position. MechaGodzilla’s pilot, Akiba, then launches one of the long cannons, now equipped with the booster, right at Godzilla, but the King of the Monsters quickly reacts and blows it up with his heat ray before is could do him any harm. However, a second cannon is fired and hits Godzilla right in his scarred chest, exploding and knocking him to the ground. Godzilla soon rises again and attacks MechaGodzilla, who now freed of the extra weight of his arm and back units, reacts quickly and knocks Godzilla to the ground once again. The King of the Monsters rises again, but MechaGodzilla is too quick and sends Godzilla flying back to the ground. However, this time Godzilla is able to strike back and sweeps MechaGodzilla’s legs out from under him with his tail, sending the robotic kaiju falling forward into Godzilla's radioactive heat ray, which strikes MechaGodzilla in the face, partially blowing away the right side of his head armor and exposing the inner mechanics. At the same time, the two Mothra larva arrive at Shinagawa port and make their way toward the battle as Godzilla prepares to destroy MechaGodzilla once and for all with his heat ray, but suddenly silk webbing begins to rain down on the Monster King as the Mothra larvas join the battle. While one Mothra larva continues the attack, the other one crawls to its dying mother, lying on the ground. Angered by the silk webbing Godzilla attacks the one larva with his heat ray, sending it flying. Seeing that, the second larva quickly crawls to its sibling. Seeming fine, both larva crawl back to their mother to check on her. Seeing this, Godzilla fires his heat ray at the three Mothras, but suddenly the adult Mothra gathers her last bit of strength and takes to the air, using her body as a shield and taking the full force of the heat ray, eventually exploding. With their mother now dead, the larvas become angry and their eyes turn from bright blue to red. Meanwhile, in the MechaGodzilla control room, it has been determined that MechaGodzilla won't work because some circuit got damaged by Godzilla's heat ray and the defect must be repaired manually. Listening in at the J.X.S.D.F's tent at the Hibiya Park, Yoshito Chujo says by radio that he wants to do the operation. The Prime Minister agrees and Yoshito heads for the downed robot as the Shirasagi transport jets attack Godzilla to lure him away from the defenseless MechaGodzilla, with one of the larvas joining in and biting onto the end of Godzilla’s tail. Godzilla flails his tail up and down, hurling the Mothra larva this way and that, but it won’t let go. While all this is going on, Yoshito finally makes it to MechaGodzilla and is easily able to find the defect circuit and repair it, but now has to restart MechaGodzilla’s systems manually from inside the robotic kaiju. Yoshito quickly finds the hatch of a maintenance booth and gets inside MechaGodzilla. As he quickly uses the control panel, he finally manages to make MechaGodzilla’s systems operational again. Outside of the mechanical beast, the battle between Godzilla and the larvas rages on as Godzilla aims at them with his radioactive heat ray, but the larvas quickly pull back and the ray strikes MechaGodzilla, melting the hatch of the maintenance booth and trapping Yoshito inside and MechaGodzilla rises again. Not far away, Godzilla is chasing the two Mothra larvas toward the diet building, trapping them. Then, just when it seems like there’s no escape for the two young kaiju, MechaGodzilla descends from the sky right in front of Godzilla. The two kaiju rush one another and begin to grapple, MechaGodzilla gaining the upper hand and shoves Godzilla backwards and both kaiju fall onto the diet building, crushing it. Both kaiju soon rise from the debris, but MechaGodzilla manages to attack first with his newly designed right arm. The hand on the arm suddenly begins to spin and transforms into a spear-like weapon. MechaGodzilla then proceeds to jam the spear right into Godzilla’s scarred chest, causing Godzilla to roar in pain. MechaGodzilla then stabs Godzilla again in the chest, drilling even deeper into Godzilla’s flesh and bone. Godzilla staggers, but remains on his feet as MechaGodzilla powers up his Triple Hyper Maser Cannon, blasting Godzilla in his wounded chest, but Godzilla still stands and roars in pain once again. Then, something suddenly happens in MechaGodzilla’s mechanical brain. Pictures of a mushroom cloud, Godzilla in a burning Tokyo in 1954, the Oxygen Destroyer, Godzilla dying in 1954, MechaGodzilla running amok, MechaGodzilla in front of the sunset, MechaGodzilla battles with Godzilla, and finally, Akane yelling that these are MechaGodzilla’s memories, the memories of the original Godzilla. As MechaGodzilla stands still next to the wounded Godzilla, the Mothra larvas begin to spray silk webbing all over the Monster King’s body, but Godzilla is weak and unable to fight back. Meanwhile, MechaGodzilla continues to stand still while Godzilla's body becomes more and more covered by the webbing. Suddenly, MechaGodzilla’s exposed mechanical eye slowly moves and watches the event taking place in front of him. Watching the event from MechaGodzilla’s control room, Prime Minister Igarashi hears the voices of the Shobijin telling him that mankind can't be so simple-minded, as not to see their own mistakes. He then mumbles that after Godzilla's defeat, MechaGodzilla’s task will be over and that the robotic kaiju will be abandoned forever. With Godzilla now lying on the ground completely encased in silk webbing, Akiba is pushes the button of the Triple Hyper Maser Cannon to finish off the Monster king, but MechaGodzilla shows no reaction to the command. Akiba tries again, but nothing happens. While the sun rises, suddenly the red line under MechaGodzilla’s eyes begins to glow and the robotic kaiju roars like the real Godzilla as he begins to move toward the fallen King of the Monsters. MechaGodzilla walks close to Godzilla, extending some extra claws from the cover plates of the chest section and grabs the cocooned Godzilla, preparing to take off with the Monster King in tow. MechaGodzilla and Godzilla then take to the sky, with Yoshito still trapped within MechaGodzilla’s body. Azusa quickly flies close to the flying kaiju in one of the two Shirasagi transport jets and shoots open the damaged hatch. Trying to escape, Yoshito falls from the hatch right in the direction of the Shirasagi. Prepared for this, Akiba activates his ejector seat and manages to grab the helpless Yoshito in mid air. With Yoshito now safe, MechaGodzilla extends some extra wires to fasten Godzilla and finally makes straight for the surface of the sea. Breaking through the ocean’s surface, MechaGodzilla roars and his eyes light up for the last time before the energy supply is shut off internally and both monsters sink to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. With the threat now gone, the Mothra larvas leave Japan together with the Shobijin, who say “We thank you for your courage, and that the soul of the dead can probably rest eternally in the cradle of time now”. Meanwhile, somewhere, the doors of a storage device for DNA samples are being closed. One of the labels read “1954 Godzilla DNA - date of extraction 1999/11/03”. |
