Gamera was a legendary ancient monster known to the people of the Arctic. When a Japanese research team was visiting a tribe of these people, unidentified planes attempted to escape when challenged by U.S. Air Force and one of the planes was shot down. The plane crashed into the ice below, detonating its load of nuclear missiles, which resulted in an atomic explosion and the revival of Gamera. Once freed, the giant turtle went on a rampage across Japan, but showing a certain kindness towards children. Later, Gamera was finally gotten rid of when the Japanese, Americans, and Soviets lured him to their base at Oshima and onto a steel platform, which was the center of a space project called the Z Plan. Soon it was revealed that the Z Plan was an enormous rocket and the platform Gamera was on closed around him, preventing the monster from escape and shooting him off to the planet Mars.
However, as the rocket headed towards Mars, it was struck a meteor and Gamera was freed from his prison. Quickly returning to Japan, Gamera attacked a hydroelectric plant to feed upon the flames and after demolishing the dam running the plant to put out the flames, disappeared into the night sky. With Gamera now gone, Japan thought it was safe, but not for long. From a fishing boat and fresh from being mutated by an infra-red ray, Barugon appeared, attacking the fishing dock before heading for Osaka and destroying the city. However, the heat of Barugon’s rainbow ray brought Gamera to Osaka, and vicious battle ensued with Barugon winning it after freezing Gamera solid and then returning to his path of destruction. Gamera later thawed and instantly sought out and attacked Barugon, dragging the monster into a lake where he soon drowned. After defeating Barugon, Gamera was labeled a hero and his attacks on man suddenly stopped all together. Then, a year later, the monster-bird Gyaos appeared and began devouring the people of Japan, Gamera soon appeared and attacked Gyaos. After many vicious and bloody battles between the two kaiju, Gamera won by dragging Gyaos into a volcano, destroying him. Not even invaders from the planet Viras could stop Gamera after he destroyed their ship before they could even begin their conquest of Earth. The aliens still went through with their plans, however, and took control of Gamera, sending the giant turtle on a rampage. However, Gamera soon broke free of their control and battled with a kaiju-sized Viras, but the Friend of all Children defeated him quickly. Gamera's next battle took him to the hidden planet Tera where two children had been abducted by a Teran saucer and are attacked by the last surviving Terans and their monster Guiron. Gamera did battle with Guiron and with the help of the children, destroyed the terrible Teran watchdog once and for all. A statue removed from Wester Island and releasing the monster Jiger was Gamera’s next battle, but the giant turtle eventually defeated her by throwing the statue itself into Jiger’s skull, killing her. Gamera was last seen thwarting the invasion plot of the alien kaiju Zigra, roasting the alien dictator to a crisp at the end of their long battle. |
