My Comments
This movie, the first of the Heisei series, went a long way toward capturing the feel of the original film, even mixing the Cold War into the plot. Definitely one of my favorite Godzilla films, very well made. Onto the synopsis...
Synopsis
Late one night out in the Pacific Ocean, the crew of a small boat is witness a gigantic, horrifying creature emerge from a rocky island mountain, but before they can report what they’ve seen, they are attacked by large sea lice, which kill all but one of the crew. The loan survivor is discovered by reporter Goro Maki, who went out in search of the missing crew and brings him back to land. Back in Tokyo, the Japanese government orders a news black out because they don’t want any news of the boat or what they saw to get out. What? The prime minister suspects the giant creature was Godzilla, returning after thirty years, and doesn’t want to cause panic all over the world. Soon, Godzilla wreaks havoc in the ocean once again and destroys a Russian nuclear submarine, causing Cold War tensions to escalate. At the same time, in the United States, a retired Steve Martin is summoned to the Pentagon to be a consultant on Godzilla during this current crisis. Meanwhile, Goro visits the sister of the man he rescued at sea, telling her against his orders that her brother is still alive and due to the constant escalating of Cold War tension, the Japanese are forced to reveal that Godzilla has returned. Finally, Godzilla arrives on the Japanese mainland and destroys a nuclear reactor, absorbing the radioactivity from it before he is interrupted by a flock of birds and follows them back out to sea, but soon returns to Tokyo.
Fearing Godzilla’s threat, but against direct orders from Japan, Russians launch a space-based nuclear missile at Tokyo while the Japanese sends the Super X after Godzilla. As United States sends a counter-missile to take out the Russian nuclear missile in space, the Super X knocks Godzilla unconscious with its cadmium missiles, but when the Russian missile detonates in the atmosphere over Japan, Godzilla is revived by the radiation and destroys the Super X. However, Dr. Hayashida has devised a plan and using the sound of birds as a lure, brings Godzilla to Oshima Island and right to the edge of the volcanic Mount Mihara. As the volcano begins to erupt, Godzilla plunges into the molten lava below, imprisoning him... for now.
