History
Varan, a deity kaiju that had been lying dormant in Kunishiroshima Island’s salt-water lake, first appeared in 1958. The natives of the island were a part of the cult of Obake, and had worshipped Varan for centuries until the U.S. Navy tested a newly created chemical in the lake, awakening Varan. Varan rose from the lake and attacked anyone and anything that got in his way. Varan was finally driven off by a large dose of the chemical that awoke him. He then retreated into the ocean and wasn't seen until the Ogasawara Islands were established and he was imprisoned there. When the Kilakks took control of the kaiju, they released Varan from the island, but it is not known what city he attacked. He viewed the final battle with King Ghidorah along with Baragon and Manda, but did not take part. When the Kilakks were finally defeated, Varan returned along with the rest of the kaiju to Ogasawara Island, where he has remained to this day.
