Gillas the Monitor
By: Ben Steinmeier

Gillasaurus walked through the Late-Cretaceous Antarctica, looking for food. He was as big as a garbage truck and he had two frills on each side where his head and neck meet, a horn on his nose and a sail that ran from his neck to his tail, like an Acrocanthosaurus. He found the carcass of a Muttabarasaurus and began eating. There was not an animal he feared. Suddenly the sky seemed to light on fire and when Gillassaurus turned his sail he felt the rays seep through him. He felt himself changing and morphing, growing lager and more ferocious. And when the storm had passed, there was nothing else around. He was now Gillas, and without a food supply, he became dormant, and waited for the right conditions.

Two scientist were doing research on Antarctica. The observation post was established to monitor the effects that global warming was having on Antarctica. The two scientists were having coffee and having a good time when a loud crack split the air. The two scientists rushed out to se what was happening. They'd wish they hadn't. There stood a giant, bipedal monitor lizard with to flaps covering it's ears and a crest like a dilophosaurus and a thin membrane running down it's back and tail. The monster bent down and examined the two scientists. It flicked it's tongue a few times and, not interested, plunged into the Antarctic Ocean.

Dr. Ridley at was on her way to an important meeting. A week ago, two men had sighted a giant mutated monitor lizard. Most wouldn't go on just that, but there were dead whale and giant and colossal squid washing up on shores. From the two scientists explanation that was the only possible thing that could make a massacre like that. She entered the boardroom and the meeting began. She was able to identify that it was a Gillasaurus, but it was altered, changed in some way that he couldn't say. She also said "if it wasn't for global warming, this monster would still be sleeping. When the meeting was over, they decided to fire on Gillas, which they named it, only if it was the provoker.

The past month went without any sign. It seemed that Gillas had left the Australian coast. Dr. Ridley sat at home looking more into Gillasaurus on her documents. They were about 50 feet long and were about the same size as a garbage truck. It was a lumbering predator that stole of creature's kills. Then on the radio came: "Attention! Attention! We have just received reports that Gillas is traveling across Queenland. His current path seems to be heading for Sidney. All Sidney civilians must evacuate! You have 12 hours till he arrives." Tanks and other military vehicles began lining the streets, ready to clash with the oncoming menace.

By the end of the day Sidney had been evacuated. All the men and machines were in place ready to fight for there homes. General Robertson stood uneasy at hq when the radio came on and he heard "Gillas is emerging from the bay" at which point he responded "fire at will." All the tanks, mortars, bazookas, machine guns and artillery at the bay opened all fire on Gillas. The sound of the machines could be heard by the evacuees miles away; the sounds of there homes being protected. Gillas roared in anger, for while none of the artillery punctured him he was still angered. Suddenly his earflaps rose forward and he let loose a torrent of solar energy on a line of tanks down a street, obliterating all. He came to the buildings and toppled them with his bulk and tail. The general looked grimly and doubted they would win Sidney.

Gillas continued into Sidney but first unleashed his solar flame on the Sidney opera house and the bridge. He crashed into buildings and unleashed his solar flame on a rooftop, killing the brave soldiers. Several Apache helicopters came to try and take out Gillas but they to fell prey to his solar flame. He turned Sidney into a "sea of fire"(quote from Gojira) and destroyed anything that dared get in it's way. As it made it's way to the shore it stepped on a few mines but they did no good. He then submerged into the ocean, leaving a destroyed Sidney as a reminder of his wrath.

Australia and the world were shocked at what had happened. Never was there a force like this that cursed the earth. Gillas was migrating up Malaysia on a course headed for Japan. Yet Dr. Ridley was able to explain his origins, that a supernova that wiped out most of earth transformed Gillas from a regular dinosaur to a monstrosity of nature. And Gillas was a reminder of how global warming would affect the world in one way or another.
