Gillas vs. Veranigor
By: Ben Steinmeier

Many were surprised how Gillas had left. After his fights with Tectora and Suchodon, he just left. Catherine believed after his attack on Sidney he had learned to stay away from cities. The world had no problem with this. Gillas sat peacefully on his island, content, hopeful to live peacefully and undisturbed.

The tropical country of Mexico was a lure to many. The beaches and the tourist attractions lured much of the world. The Aztec pyramids amazed the world all over with there beauty and grace. Archeologist all over the world wanted to see them. Yet there was the question of how they were built. That’s what Mexico Archeologist Emario Sanqez wished to discover. The archeologist had been delving deep into the pyramids, trying to find out more about the ancient civilization. However he had to get pass the booby traps that littered the ancient building. Finally he came upon a room. The room had writing.

“This is unlike anything I’ve ever seen” said Emario. “It’s Aztec but this is like a written log, unlike anything I’ve ever seen. “So strange.” He took pictures on his digital camera and then went back to his tent. He uploaded the pictures onto his laptop and began to examine them. He stayed all night reading the script, until finally, in the morning, he had finished. The story went something like this: Long ago there lived ancient but powerful peoples. The two had harnessed power unlike any magic imaginable. But the two peoples had gone into a war that never seemed to end. The war raged for millennia with each side never gaining an advantage. The two peoples it seemed would eventually destroy each other. However one of the sides, through dark magic, created Veranigor. The dark dragon could blot out the sun and let loose terrible powers. The dark dragon then destroyed the enemy of its creators, destroying all trace of them. His creators celebrated at the victory. We were taught how to build by them and our empire was glorious. Yet the peace could not last. Veranigor then turned on its creators and destroyed them like it had there enemies. There was not a shade of there empire left. Only those who remember can tell. And now we tell you.

Emario stared amazed at the screen as he read. It all seemed so strange. It couldn’t be a prank. It was too deep in the temple. Was it written by a madman? He wasn’t sure and didn’t have time to think about it. The earth began to shake! His books fell over, his tables trembled. He heard the trees sway and the waves. But just as it started, it was gone.

Catherine was continuing her work on Gillas. She kept working late hours and overtime to the surprise of others. After Gillas had saved her from the jaws of Suchodon, Catherine had seemed to become more latched to Gillas. Many believed it was just coincidence. But Catherine knew better. She was tired. It was night, under a starry sky. One of her favorite pass-times was astronomy. She loved to gaze at the stars and constellations. Gillas didn’t mind that she lay against his side. Then there was something odd. Gillas could feel it but couldn’t identify it. He raised his head to the air and stared west. Something different was happening, he knew that. But he put that out of his mind. Now was the time to relax. He turned his head south, to where his home was. He could still remember his lost life. Before he was a mutated monster. Sometimes Gillas had this feeling he had to go there. But he put that out of his mind. He put his head down and relaxed. From there he drifted to sleep.
Catherine could never stand Gillas’ snoring. That was what the sound-proof glass was for. She walked down the side of Gillas until finally she hit the tail. She closed the door and grabbed a cup of coffee. As she drank, she kept thinking back to the fight with Suchodon. Had Gillas really saved her from Suchodon or had she just got lucky? The question burned in her head like a blaze in a fireplace, and her mind was the firewood. She eventually, like Gillas, fell asleep.

Emario had been having tremors all week. It was astounding. He basically got one every hour. He would be working when they would come again and again. Quite irritating to say the least. He had been only able to find a painting of Veranigor, but like the text said, there was nothing left of the civilizations.
Everyday he got more and more frustrated. The text would go down in history or it would go down as a hoax. He needed to find more evidence. However one day smoke began leaking from a nearby mountain. At first they thought it was a volcano. However there was not supposed to be a volcano in the area. So Emario and his crew decided to go and investigate the mystery. They hiked up the mountain until they reached a cave with smoke billowing out. They put there gas masks and night vision goggles on and went in. Even with the goggles it was hard to see. They did it more on feel, for the cave was more like a tunnel that went straight. They finally came on a cavern and bent down to clear the smoke. They would wish they hadn’t. Down below was a giant black dragon. Its wings folded over it like a blanket. The tail curled around as it peacefully slept. It had a halo of horns where the head and neck met and a nasal horn that curved forward like a raptor talon. As it breathed through its nose more smoke came through. Emario instantly knew what it was: Veranigor. Emario got a cable ready and started his descent. It took ten minutes before he touched the bottom. The monster’s jaws were as long as a bus. Emario went forward to take a closer look. Just as he reached the head, an eye opened. Emario froze. He knew it saw him, as the pupil narrowed. The beast raised its head and with a snap, Emario was gone. The beast spread its wings and began pounding its head against the roof of the cavern. The rest of the archeologist ran out through the tunnel. Finally the behemoth crashed through the ceiling and he was gone.

Veranigor’s escape could be heard all across the United States and Mexico. But Gillas didn’t need to hear it. Like he sensed Tectora and Suchodon, he sensed Veranigor awaken. Gillas got up and was about to leave when he stopped. All he wanted to do was stay home, away from conflict. He decided to stay. He was tired of his life of fighting and violence. He then laid his head down.
Veranigor was moving fast. He was traveling at Mach 2, quickly towards Mexico City. The towns beneath him stood as targets, yet he ignored them. He had a bigger fish to fry.

The speakers all over Mexico City blared in Mexican “the city is to evacuate. There is a giant dragon coming this way. This is not a joke. Evacuate immediately.” But it was too late. Veranigor had already hit the city. He opened his jaw and let loose a column of green flame that instantly ignited the buildings. Every tall building he passed he knocked over with his spiked tail. By 10 minutes to his arrival he had trashed half of Mexico City. But then the ground began to shake. Then out of the Earth burst out a giant pill bug. Tectora curled into a ball as Veranigor flew overhead and tried to breathe fire on him. However Tectora’s shell held and the fire was bounced back at Veranigor. The blast hit his chest and Veranigor went down, taking many buildings with him. But Tectora wasn’t done. It rolled into a ball and began to roll. Picking up speed, it slammed into Veranigor’s chest. The dark dragon went back a few steps but didn’t fall. Tectora tried the same tactic but Veranigor simply but the oncoming pill bug with its head, sending Tectora flying like a beach ball. Tectora flew into a church, squishing it like a bug. Veranigor moved in quickly to squish its foe. Out came its tail spike. As Tectora reared up the spike went through, impaling the worm. With a heave Tectora went flying. But Veranigor wasn’t done. Suddenly a bolt of electricity zapped Tectora and sent him flying even farther. Veranigor could tell he had beaten Tectora. With a great flap from his wings he took off and flew west, leaving Tectora to die.

It was another day of work. But in Catherine’s opinion, it was the best job in the world. She was studying the most powerful monster, also the friendliest, in history. It was like studying Godzilla. Suddenly Gillas snapped his head west. Catherine looked at Gillas with concern. Then she remembered what happened with Suchodon.
She called on the radio “everyone head to the bunker right now.” The bunker had been built after Suchodon’s appearance. She began to get questions but come them short saying “I’ll explain when you’re in. ‘Now GO!” She took one final look at Gillas. He had a snarl on his lips. She quickly slid down the ladder and sprinted. She looked back and could see a shape against the sunset. Before she knew it she was in the bunker with the rest of the scientists. They looked at her with questioning looks. She explained about Gillas and the monster. The scientists could only weather the storm.

Gillas fired a beam of Solar Flame at the dark dragon. It landed a hit but seemed to do nothing. Gillas fired again and again but it would not stop. Veranigor fired green fire at Gillas. It carved the land around Gillas but didn’t land a hit. Then Veranigor landed, displaying his might by opening his wings. He then began to flap and from the wings came a rush of smoke. It blew over Gillas. The smoke had no effect on him but he could not see. Then Veranigor charged and collided with Gillas. Gillas fell over and Veranigor began to stomp on Gillas. Gillas screeched in pain.
Catherine could hear the cries from Gillas. They hit her like a tsunami. She couldn’t take it anymore. She opened the bunker door, ignoring the scientists. She ran out and saw Veranigor stomping on Gillas. Gillas saw her and gave a cry of warning. Suddenly Veranigor looked at Catherine. She saw the evil and destruction in those eyes. Then a lightning bolt erupted from his nasal horn and made contact with Catherine. She wasn’t burned but she couldn’t move. She was suddenly being drawn closer to the jaws. She realized she was going to be eaten. But then the charge was gone and she fell into Veranigor’s hand. She still couldn’t move. She saw the great black drake take off and her one sound that brought tears to her ears: the cry of sadness from Gillas.

Immediately the mainland was contacted. Jim explained the situation. “Listen, I know he’s a risk, but I don’t think Veranigor will attack quite yet.”
One on the radio said “how do you know its name is Veranigor?”
Jim replied “because my cousin discovered it.” He then said “Veranigor kidnapped Catherine for one reason: he can use her against Gillas. That’s why he didn’t kill her. Gillas is now following Veranigor. Where is the monster?”
“We got a report from one of our battleships that it’s headed for Osaka.”
Suddenly they were droned out. There was a buzzing that was so loud that the tables and all the equipment began to shake. Jim went outside and saw a blur flying over. He couldn’t see it well, but he could tell that it was big. He called on the radio saying “there’s an unidentified flying object bearing down on Veranigor. Another monster is on the way.”

Catherine awoke with a start. She looked around at her surroundings. She was on top of a Japanese castle. It stood like a tower over the city. She finally realized she was in Osaka. Just as she got up a dragon head looked at her. Veranigor’s eyes of destruction looked over Catherine. He then flapped his great wings and took off. He circled the area, looking around, like someone waiting for a ride. Catherine began to worry. He had, single-handedly, taken down Gillas. True, Gillas had lost a fight before, but not like that. She sat down and put her arms around her legs. And she prayed to God, not of her survival, but for Gillas’.
Then Osaka Bay exploded like a boom, followed by a roar of rage. Veranigor gazed hungrily at Gillas. He changed his course and began to fly towards toward Gillas. Gillas anticipated this and threw a ship in harbor, then firing his solar flame, igniting the ship. It smashed against Veranigor and the dragon immediately lost its altitude. It smashed through the wharfs as it crashed and slid into the harbor. Gillas roared in triumph but was cut short when Veranigor burst out of the bay. It swooped on Gillas and grabbed him. Veranigor flew with Gillas in it’s clutches over the industrial centre. Gillas fired his solar flame at Veranigor, forcing the dragon to drop its foe. Gillas crashed through a factory. Gillas was stunned as Veranigor landed and walked to finish of its enemy. Then there was a loud buzzing and Veranigor roared in pain and anger. Gillas was at first puzzled. But then his confusion was cured when Veranigor turned around. On his back was an adult Tectora. The insectoid was clinging to Veranigor’s back and biting into the dragon’ neck with his mandibles. Gillas took the opportunity to blast Veranigor’s side with solar flame. Veranigor roared and Tectora then lifted into the air. Veranigor immediately turned its head and blasted Tectora with a blast of fire. Gillas charged forward but was blasted back by a charge of lightning. Gillas got up and the two monsters strode forward. Veranigor stood on his two legs, almost doubling his height. Gillas was not intimidated. Nothing could make him back down now. The two monsters through there bulks against each other. Veranigor snapped, Gillas clawed. The two titans kept going, never falling back. Finally Veranigor slammed his jaw against Gillas’ head, toppling him. But Tectora flew and slammed into Veranigor’s head, toppling the kaiju. As Gillas got up, Tectora’s mandibles closed on his sail. Gillas at first thought it was an attack. Then he felt the energy entering him. His sail and ear flaps went red as blood as it seeped into him. Veranigor got up and saw this change, but it was too late. Gillas let loose a river of solar flame. However this solar flame didn’t look like the northern lights, but like a solar flare from the sun. The corona flame erupted from Gillas’ maw washed over Veranigor like a flashflood. Then it was gone.

Catherine stood there, amazed. Gillas had triumphed. Gillas strode over to Osaka castle and looked at Catherine. He then put his snout. Catherine at first wondered what he was doing. Then she realized and began to walk. She walked on Gillas’ snout like a ramp. She sat by an earflap, and they went home.
