Gillas vs. Komodogater
By: Ben Steinmeier & James Ewasiuk
Prologue:
The world has been repeatedly threatened by giant monsters, either awakened or created by nuclear waste, and pollution, among other things. To combat their threat, an international peacekeeping force known as the Fire Bringers has now devoted themselves solely on fighting these monsters. One of the most famous attacks was by Gillas in Sydney. Since then however, Gillas has defended Japan from two other evils, Suchodon and Tectora. Whether or not Gillas saved Japan on purpose, or was defending his territory, is unknown. A research facility has been set up on Gillas's home, Gillas Island, to study the monster. The most destructive and infamous attack was by Komodogater on Ukania in Canada, a creature of pure and unspeakable evil. The monster was thought dead, but soon returned. The monster is currently hiding in the pacific, and NATO and Fire Bringer forces are on red alert. He is now considered the world’s most dangerous threat. Being a Pacific Rim country, Japan is at danger from Komodogater, and the Fire Bringers have taken over all monster fighting control there, including the base on Gillas Island.
..............................
It had been a year since Komodogater's return, and ships were still searching for him. At one point during the year, it was hoped that the monster had died, but then a destroyer went missing and washed up on the Mexican coast with two huge claw marks in it. That had been five months ago, and no one doubted Komodogater any more.
Dr. Catherine Ridley went about her day, walking around Gillas Island, zooming from tent to tent, building to building, overseeing and supervising all of the experiments. She found Gillas resting peacefully by a small lake that the monster drank from and swam in. She smiled, but the smile soon disappeared when she saw a Fire Bringer. She despised the Fire Bringers on the island. She hated the constant armed soldiers in full battle gear patrolling the island, and the tanks that rumbled around. Gillas Island was not a military camp, but it was turning out that way. The soldiers also made Gillas very weary and stressed, as they brought back memories of the Australian Army at Sydney. Gillas was staying farther and farther away from the people now, and the soldiers constantly had a missile pointed at Gillas, 'just in case.' She did like a few of the actual Fire Bringer staff, however. She got along very well with General Gregory Lambert, and Alfred Poole. However, she hated General Lance Reynolds, who was a seethingly ugly man with an equally ugly personality. The one she liked the most however, was Stanley Hanson, and sixty-five year old retired British scientist, who know worked part time in the science department of Fire Bringers.
Catherine knew that she was the top expert on monsters in the world, though she was modest, but Stanley was the second best, and had discovered the M Gene, a gene present in all creatures that can cause them to mutate into monsters. Catherine and Stanley were now studying Gillas's M Gene, trying to find just how the solar flare millions of years ago had manipulated the Gillasaurus into Gillas. Catherine passed two soldiers smoking, and went inside a large green tent, where she and Stanley were studying the Gene. Stanley was there, but had fallen asleep. In a corner, curled up in a scaly ball, was the miniature Komodogater clone, and Stanley's pet, Vincent. Stanley and Catherine had also been studying Vincent, to find a way to kill Komodogater.
As Catherine entered, Vincent woke with a start. The min clone stretched as it woke, kind of like a cat. Vincent walked over and sniffed Catherine. Catherine had taken a real liking to Vincent. He was cute and harmless. She patted him and then went over to Stanley. She tapped on his shoulder and his eyes opened. He looked up and said "ah, Catherine. Sorry, I dozed off."
"Its all right," Catherine said, "you've been working hard. You sad you wanted to see me?"
"Ah, yes, indeed" replied Stanley. "You see I've been looking into both Gillas' cells and Vincent's cells. This morning I came upon an astonishing discovery. If you would come with me to the lab." They walked through a tent flap into another room where the gene analysis was being done. There were two pictures of the different genes. Though they had a few differences, they were strikingly similar. Stanley said "When I saw the cells I used the electron microscope to get a better look and found a surprising discovery. Vincent's m gene, or Komodogater's, and Gillas' are so similar. They are almost exactly alike."
Catherine said "but why?"
Stanley said "I was hoping you might know."
Catherine said "according to legend, Gaterdon was mutated from a tyrannosaurus skull right?" Stanley nodded. "Then it might be possible," Catherine said, "that dinosaurs not only were biologically enhanced in brains and specialty features, but they're m gene also evolved. That's why they're similar. Gaterdon and Gillasaurus were both dinosaurs. Gillas and Komodogater are only advanced dinosaurs."
Stanley said "so you’re saying that every dinosaur has an advanced m gene"?
Catherine answered "I wouldn't say so. I think that Komodogater and Gillas are advanced specimens. That they are basically up in the m gene evolutionary tree. Komodogater is probably a bit farther then Gillas, yet then again the solar radiation storm might have also chained something with Gillas' m gene. The only way we'll know is if we see Gillas' m gene properly."
"Unfortunately," Catherine continued, "this sample of skin is too worn from experiments, so we'll need a fresh one. And Gillas won't let anyone near him, not even me since the the Fire Bringers arrived."
"Hmmm. That is a pickle." Stanley replied. "Tranquilizers?"
"We don't have any big enough." Catherine answered.
"And we can't wait for him to fall asleep normally either, because he'll smell us and wake up." Stanley said. "What about Vincent?"
"Vincent?" Catherine asked, amused. "Why would we get your pet?"
"Because," Stanley said, "there are numerous small alligators and birds by the lake where Gillas sleeps. If Gillas wakes and sees Vincent, he'll just think it’s an alligator, and take no notice." Stanley looked pleased with himself.
"But how do we get Vincent to take the sample?" asked Catherine. Stanley's smile vanished.
"Oh yeah." he said grumpily. "Forgot about that part."
"Don't worry Stan, we'll think of a way" Catherine reassured.
"Yes, we will." Stanley said. "Um.. Also Catherine, I would very much like to see a bone from a Gillasaurus other than Gillas. I would like to compare them, and maybe see if I can extract DNA and compare M Genes." Catherine nodded, told Stanley where they were, and started brainstorming on how to get Vincent to get the skin sample.
A Japanese fishing boat sailed the Pacific Ocean. It was a very small ship, big enough for about nine men and that made it worse when on the way back a storm started. Huge waves slammed against the tiny boat, and the some of the days impressive catch slid off the deck.
The men yelled in Japanese at each other, and one man fell overboard with a pile of fish, disappearing underneath the water. It was dark, and rain, and lightning, and waves were on all sides. Then, the crew heard a loud bellow, and a gigantic two fingered reptilian hand burst forth from the waves. The hand was bigger than the boat itself, and slashed the boat, ripping it up and killing all onboard except for one.
That one floated terrified and insane in the water, when suddenly a pair of humongous crocodile jaws came up fro the watery deeps around the man. The jaws closed killing and swallowing the man. Then, the jaws retreated beneath the waves.
Stanley then got an idea. He showed Vincent a picture of Gillas and taught him to bite of a bit of Gillas' sail. It took a day but was finished. Vincent went creepy around at the dead of night. He kept to the trees, not wanting to be seen. Finally after an hour, he came by the lake where Gillas slept. He quietly crept up the side, keeping an eye on the monster. Vincent grabbed a bit of sail and began to tug. It was hard with his dull teeth and took several minutes. Finally he ripped it off and Gillas awoke. He glared at the little monster but decided it was just playing and just growled. Vincent raced back to the libratory tent where Stanley was asleep on his. Vincent nudged Stanley, and he woke. As he saw the bit of sail he smiled wide. He then began to observe the sail membrane.
Catherine was snoozing away peacefully when her cell phone rang. She picked it up and said "hello?" half asleep.
"Catherine, it’s me, Stan" came the scientists’ voice. "I got a sample of Gillas, you should come see."
"I'll be right there" Catherine replied, now fully awake. Within minutes she was over at the tent.
Stanley saw her and said "what's happening with the Gillasaurus bone?"
Catherine said "It'll be here in the morning. Now how did you get Gillas' skin sample?"
Stanley said proudly "Vincent was able to get it." Catherine looked at the clone. It was now sleeping peacefully.
Stanley said "I looked at Gillas' skin sample and came across something startling. Gillas' m gene may seem like Komodogater's but they have different affects. You see, Gillas' m gene seems to cancel out mutation for some reason. Instead the energy powers the m genes. His m genes are more like batteries."
Catherine said "but if that was true, then why did Suchodon's lightning hurt him"?
"Because," said Stanley, "I believe that they can only take in so much. It's like damage goes two steps forward but one step back."
”So sort of like regeneration?" asked Catherine?
"More like better resistance" replied Stanley. The two scientists stared at the skin sample, for they had now unlocked the source of Gillas' power.
It was night time. The Kyoto skyline looked beautiful at night, and the city was still busy, with adults going home after working late. After Gillas killed Suchodon, the monsters remains were being studied in a huge lab in Kyoto, which brought the city much tourism. Being one of the only cities in Japan to not be bombed by the United States during World War Two, Kyoto still had many traditional buildings, which just added to the beauty. Beauty, which would disappear very soon.
The ground began to rumble slightly, and the citizens took cover, thinking it was an earthquake. The ground ripped in the center of downtown, and a huge beige crocodile head broke free, roaring into the sky. The crocodile emerged completely, showing its full form. An upright standing crocodile on two legs. He had medium sized two fingered arms, and beige skin. Huge three toed tyrannosaurus feet, and long curved fangs on his top jaw. A row of hair ran down from its back to the middle of its tail. It had two evil red glowing eyes without pupils. Everyone knew what it was. They had heard the stories. It was the world’s number one threat. Komodogater.
Komodogater roared menacingly, and let loose a blast of electricity from his mouth, frying the city. Japanese soldiers arrived and set up a blockade. They blasted Komodogater, but the fanged croc growled and simply walked through them, destroying everything in his path.
The monsters foot crushed a house, the tail toppled a skyscraper. Komodogater headed for the Suchodon Lab, incinerating Kyoto with his electric beam. Komodogater stopped at the lab, and crumbled it with his massive bulk and and hands. The lab destroyed, Komodogater searched through the rubble and pulled out the corpse of Suchodon. The corpse was extremely well preserved, looking exactly as it had when Gillas killed it.
Komodogater injected his claws and fangs into the dead beast, and sucked all of the electricity left in it. Bolts of electricity danced around the two monsters, as Komodogater absorbed it, adding to his already tremendous strength.
With Suchodon sucked dry, Komodogater commenced with eating the body, ripping it up with his claws and jaws. Dried blood covered his maw as he ate, and soon Suchodon was nothing more then a skeleton. His stomach full and his body recharged, Komodogater blasted the rest of downtown with his ray, and burrowed underground, heading back to the ocean.
Komodogater was still hungry. And he could since another creature, something that if consumed, would give Komodogater yet more strength. Komodogater changed course, and headed for Gillas Island.
The Fire Bringers were on red alert. On Gillas Island, the soldiers got ready, infantry arming their guns, tanks moving out. Catherine watched, a bit afraid, but a bit disgusted at the soldiers. So Komodogater was coming. War was coming to Gillas Island, and Catherine knew that Gillas would be in the thick of it. But whether or not Gillas would attack the Fire Bringers as well, Catherine did not know. Catherine prayed he wouldn't. Of course, knowing General Lance Reynolds, she should also worry about the Fire Bringers attacking Gillas. She knew that now more than ever she and Stanley needed to work on the weapon to kill Komodogater. She headed back to the tent.
Stanley was on his way too, but he passed General Lance Reynolds drilling troops. Lance was a very ugly man and a bad person too.
"Drilling the GI's I see?" Stanley said mockingly. "Training them to go where they'll get killed? Good job!" Lance glared. The two had a seething rivalry.
"For your information, Mr. Hanson, these are the finest soldiers on this island!"
"Doesn't say much about the others then, does it?" asked Stanley. "Of course it’s never the troops, always the commander who trains them." Lance's face went red. The general had a very bad temper.
"I AM THE MOST DISCIPLINED SOLDIER IN THIS ARMY!" yelled Lance.
"Okay, disciplined Reynolds" Stanley said. "Your flies undone." Lance screamed in frustration as Stanley walked away laughing, headed for the tent.
When the information on Komodogater came, Catherine knew that they were in trouble. Gillas was strong, and on normal occasion, would have been able to tackle Komodogater. But this changed things. She immediately went to the one man who was in charge. She entered the building and knocked on his office door. She walked in and said "Sir, you need to send the Alphaship."
"Alfred looked at her, puzzled for a second and said "but we have a full military base, and Gillas, here to fight. Why do we need to send the Alphaship?"
Catherine replied "because Komodogater got stronger from consuming Suchodon's energy. He is now more powerful then Gillas."
Alfred understood and said "I'll get the Alphaship over as fast as possible. But Catherine," he said before she left, "Gillas will need to fight." Catherine nodded then left. She hopped in a jeep then began to drive. She knew Gillas wasn't happy with her, but she had to try. Finally she arrived beside Gillas. The monster looked down at Catherine. She could tell he wasn't in a happy mood. Then there eyes met. She knew Gillas had sensed Komodogater. She just didn't know if he would fight.
After being destroyed yet again by the Sun Beast, the Alphaship had once again, been rebuilt. It was costing millions of dollars, and the United Nations were being to wonder if it was worth it, but it had been rebuilt all the same.
The newest Alphaship had been successful, and the two pilots, Yoshima Yamane and Jonathan Strato, had been highly praised, and were very confident. But when called in fight Komodogater, they got shudders. Komodogater had destroyed the third Alphaship with one snap of his jaws. Jonathan had even more reason to worry. Komodogater had killed his older brother, Nick Strato, who had been captain of the third Alphaship and crewmember on the second. But none-the-less, duty called.
Like the previous incarnation, this Alphaship was colored flaming red instead of the original, and was armed to the teeth. The arrow soared overhead Gillas Island, ready to fight. Jonathan watched the ground troops align themselves around the island. It was an impressive sight, as the columns of green marched.
The Alphaship landed beside the laboratory tent, and Jonathan and Yoshima stepped out.
Catherine, Reynolds, Alfred, and Stanley were there to greet the pilots. Alfred began giving them instructions. Lance cut in.
"Sir, I think we might need to arrange protection for Miss Ridley here." Everyone glared at Reynolds. Reynolds ignored this. "Sir, its just that she is so valuable, and a woman, so she must be-"
"WHAT!" Catherine challenged. "WHAT!?"
Reynolds smiled devilishly. "I could do it sir, if you wouldn't mind." This was followed by another WHAT! Everyone continued to glare.
"Don't be silly, Lance old boy!" Stanley said. "That’s not your reason! You just want to get out of the fight!" Lance gritted his teeth, and tried to control his temper at Stanley guessing the real reason.
"WHAT!" yelled Catherine?
"I only have your best interests at heart, maam." replied Lance. Catherine stared, disgusted at the ugly man.
The defenders of the island were all hushed, waiting for the oncoming terror. Not one would run away. Here they would stand. Then they heard the ocean splash and a roar. Komodogater had come. Instantly satellite had positioned and the missiles were now ready. The missile pads let loose there projectiles. They flew over the sky and there was a then there was a boom and Komodogater's roar of anger. The Alphaship with a squadron of F-15s. Jonathan went around a mountain and then saw Komodogater. He and Yoshime fired there batteries at Komodogater with the jets following there course of action. The missiles hit Komodogater, creating a cloud of smoke. At first Jonathan thought that they might have done it. Then they heard the terrorizing roar and he quickly banked, knowing what was coming. The beam of electricity hit 3 jets. Once again they fired they're gun batteries, but nothing happened. Jonathan ordered a retreat as they flew inland. Komodogater followed, destroying all in his way. Jonathan swore. They were fighting and Gillas, supposedly the "good" monster wasn't. Soon Komodogater hit base and began his destruction. But no matter what they threw at him nothing worked. Komodogater saw the humans. He hated the site. He began to charge his breath. Then there was pain on his right side with a flash. And advancing on the croc was Gillas.
Komodogater bared his fangs and bellowed. He snatched up a soldier and threw him in his mouth, swallowing as if to mock Gillas. Gillas snarled, and the Alphaship hovered beside him. Gillas looked at the Alphaship, wondering to attack it or not. Either way, Komodogater did, blasting it with his electric ray. The Alphaship veered out of the way, getting scraped, and Gillas roared and charged at his foe. Komodogater extended his elbow blade, and slashed Gillas's belly when he got close enough, sending blood everywhere. Gillas toppled over, and Komodogater began ripping savagely with his jaws, crushing Gillas's left arm. Gillas bit onto Komodogater's arm and threw him over beside him. He bit into Komodogater's jaw with his fangs, covering the crocodile's jaw with blood. Gillas and Komodogater both got up and began attacking each other ferociously. Both Gillas' and Komodogater's blood went everywhere as they fought. They slammed balks, clawed, bit, and any tool. As they grappled Komodogater put in his tail stinger and began to send through bolts of electricity. Gillas roared in agony but fired his solar fire searing Komodogater's shoulder. Komodogater fell against the side of a mountain and Gillas grabbed his tail. Gillas dragged Komodogater around, but Komodogater sent a charge of electricity through him, causing Gillas to let go. Komodogater snarled and got up, punching Gillas in the face. Then, Komodogater ripped up Gillas's face sending blood and flesh everywhere. The red liquid trickled down Gillas's face, and Komodogater kicked him. Gillas got back up, and fired his solar flame. Komodogater was sent back, and fired his electricity ray, knocking Gillas down too. The tow fired again, and the beams collided, creating a huge explosion. When the smoke cleared, Komodogater charged, elbow blades extended. His neck frill unfurled as he roared, then recoiled.
Komodogater ripped up Gillas. The dinosaur now looked disfigured, with blood everywhere. Komodogater took a moment to a sip up some blood, then stomped Gillas in the face with his stinger, generating electricity. Using his strong jaws, Komodogater partially crushed Gillas's windpipe, and the monster began breathing very loudly and weezy. Komodogater screamed in delight, as Gillas fell unconscious. He was about to strike the final blow, his body covered in Gillas's blood, when the Alphaship swung around, pelting Komodogater with missiles. The croc turned around, and attacked the vessel, leaving his unconscious and severely wounded foe.
Catherine could tell that Komodogater had gotten too strong. Gillas could not win this. Unless... Catherine said "Alfred, order the Alphaship to fire a heat ray at Gillas' sail." Alfred began to talk but Catherine said "just trust me and do it." The Alphaship fired a heat ray at Gillas' sail. At first nothing happened. Then the sail started to darken. Gillas' wounds were beginning to heal. Soon Gillas' sail was blood red and all his small wounds had healed completely and His large wounds had healed more. Gillas awoke with what seemed a fire in his eye. However the Alphaship was then blasted by Komodogater, but before it was hit, two small specs flew out of the Alphaship; escape pods. Komodogater was about to kill them when he heard a roar. He turned around just in time to receive a punch in slash in the face by Gillas. As soon as the slash hit there was a burst of energy like an explosion. Komodogater backpedaled but Gillas bit onto his shoulder and injected the poison. Komodogater tried to struggle, but the venom was too strong. He went limp. Gillas held on, injecting all the poison his body had manufactured in to his foe. Gillas stayed for two minutes, and let go, no venom left. Komodogater stumbled then... asserted himself? Catherine couldn't believe it. The poison had taken no effect at all! Komodogater roared, and the two monsters clashed. Neither was winning, as they both pummeled each other, creating a cloud of dust. It cleared, and the humans saw that they both were very injured, growling and snarling at each other. They attacked again, and they both fell down. Komodogater got up first, and blasted Gillas into a building with his electric ray. Gillas tried to get up but was knocked down by Komodogater. He tripped Komodogater with his tail and finally was able to get up. Komodogater and Gillas went at each other. The two were now moving towards the ocean. Artillery was firing away at the two monsters. They didn't care.
Catherine and Stanley rushed to the artillery, yelling at the men to concentrate all fire on Komodogater, and not Gillas. But the blasts were too loud, and the soldiers and seen to many comrades killed by other monsters to listen anyway.
Komodogater charged Gillas, and the two fell into the pacific, creating a huge splash. The soldiers ceased fire as the Fire Bringer Submarines moved in, and everyone who hadn't already been killed by Komodogater watched as the surface below the water bubbled. Undoubtedly, the two were still fighting.
The islands occupants waited. The bubbling was now farther out and they could tell that the fight under was ferocious. Finally an image came from the sub. Stanley, Catherine and Albert were the first at the screen. There was Gillas. He looked ripped apart and was limping back. His sail was torn in several places and he had many cuts and burns. Yet Komodogater could not be seen. Many cheered, believing Gillas had killed Komodogater. But both Catherine and Stanley knew. Komodogater wasn't dead, just driven off.
Gillas returned to his lake, and immediately fell asleep. He had not won: it had been a tie. The Submarine was still looking for Komodogater. Alfred walked over too Catherine, and shook her hand.
"Well Dr. Ridley, it seems that the Fire Bringers are back to square one. Like before, we do not know where Komodogater is. But rest assured, we will leave Gillas Island and let you get along with your research on Gillas." Catherine smiled appreciatively, and went off to find Stanley. She found him in his tent, packing up. Vincent lay on Stanley's bed, not asleep, but almost. Catherine smiled, and walked in to say goodbye. Vincent looked up and saw Catherine. The clone began to lick her hand as Stanley said "well, Catherine, it was nice working with you." They shook hands and Catherine walked out. She was glad that the forces were leaving. She had to admit, not all Fire Bringers were bad. Still she looked on the horizon as the Alphaship flew back to base.
Life Support systems had been hooked up to Gillas, who was letting humans closer to him. The dinosaur looked to be healthy, and was regaining his strength.
Alfred returned to Ukania, to oversee the final rebuilding, and then left for New York. Stanley had gone to Kona to study, and the Fire Bringers had now completely vacated Gillas Island. Large amounts of Komodogater's blood had been found all around the pacific. And it had been deemed that the monstrosity had finally died of his wounds. All was well.
