Godzilla
By: Dawn McKechnie

2nd place in the G-Fest`2001 Costume Contest
Costume Height: 6 feet, 6 inches

Made for: The G-Fest`2001 Costume Contest

Made of: It's made of upolstry foam of different thicknesses, 1/8th of an inch, 1/4 inch, 1 inch, 2 inch and 4 inch as well as plastic, velcro, melted glue, and lots of paint.

How long it took to make: About a year on and off to completion

How she made the suit: The upolstry foam was stiched together with a curved quilting needle and covered with melt glue for texture and durability. Then it was treated head to toe with gesso and painted with a black latex paint, then hightlighted with grey and white latex paint. As well blacklight reactive and glow in the dark paint was added (the clear kinds) so it glows purple and green in clubs.
The eyes are plastic which I painted and backlit with panel lighting. The head is a typical mascott head on a batting helmet. There is a hatch in the back, much like the ones in the original Toho suits, so I can get in and out. The edges of the hatch are hidden by the two rows of fins that run down Godzilla's back. When I'm wearing lifts inside I usually need a bit of help balancing to get in. I also need someone to help with the enclosures in the back which are velcro. The head and arms were originally part of the whole bodysuit but were later modified to detach/attach using velcro. It was too hot and unmanageable with it being all one piece.
