In 1991, a group of time travelers called the “Futurians” arrived in Japan in a large time machine they call their “Mothership.” The crew consists of two Caucasian men, Gurenchiko and Wilson, a Japanese woman named Emi Kano, a superhuman android dubbed M11, and several other androids (M10s). Upon their arrival, the Futurians explain to the Japanese government that they are from the year 2204, but in the future, there is no Japan because Godzilla completely destroyed the nation. They also claim that they can go back to 1944 and teleport the dinosaur that would become Godzilla as a result of a nuclear bomb test ten years later away, thereby avoiding the creation of Godzilla. Teresawa, Miki Saegusa, and Professor Mazaki are requested by the Futurians to come along and they do so, boarding the time shuttle with Emi Kano and M11, they then travel back in time to Lagos Island and witness the U.S. invasion of the island in 1944. The Godzillasaurus, the dinosaur that becomes Godzilla, forces the Americans back, killing all that are on the island, but it is wounded by the U.S. naval ships. After the Japanese troops salute their fallen hero and leave, the Futurians teleport the Godzillasaurus from Lagos Island to the Bering Sea before returning to 1991, but before they left, the Futurians release three, bio-engineered creatures called Dorats onto the island. Ten years later, the trio of creatures were exposed to the nuclear bomb test and fused together into the gigantic kaiju King Ghidorah. So when the crew returns to the present, they find out that Godzilla has indeed vanished, but a new, three-headed monster called King Ghidorah has appeared and is destroying cities across Japan. It is soon discovered that the Futurians are actually members of an organization called the “Earth Union,” a group that is unhappy with the balance of world power in the future, as Japan is the major superpower nation in 2204. So they devised a plan to come back in time to destroy Japan in the past so that it would not become so powerful in the future and by eliminating Godzilla, they eliminated Japan’s greatest defense, and created a monster that they could control in King Ghidorah.
So once Emi discovers that Wilson and Gurenchiko are up to, she secretly reprograms Android M11 to help her in her quest and also warns Terasawa. The Futurians soon tell the Japanese their intent, but they refuse to surrender and begin trying to come up with plans to attack them. Shindo, the leader of the Japanese garrison on Lagos Island in 1944, brings up the idea that Godzilla can be re-created by using his nuclear submarine to blast the Godzillasaurus in the Bering Sea with a dose of nuclear energy. However, while on its mission, the submarine is destroyed by an already re-created, bigger, and much more powerful Godzilla, which was re-created by a sunken Russian nuclear submarine. Godzilla soon comes to Japan and battles King Ghidorah, quickly defeating him and sending the three-headed monster plummeting into the ocean before destroying the Futurians Mothership and advancing on Tokyo. However, Emi and M11 escape to the future in their time shuttle where they revive King Ghidorah with 23rd Century technology and create the cyborg Mecha-King Ghidorah, who travels back to 1991 to face Godzilla during his attack on Tokyo with Emi and M11 in the cockpit. The two kaiju engage in battle and in the end, Mecha-King Ghidorah captures Godzilla with his “Machine-Hand” and carries the King of the Monsters out to sea, but Godzilla blasts the cyborg at point-blank range with his heat ray and both monsters plummet into the ocean below. Emi and M11’s time shuttle then bursts through the ocean surface and soars off back to the future. |
