History
When a second Godzilla appeared in 1999, forty-five years after the original had been killed by the oxygen destroyer, the JSDF was caught completely off guard. They immediately sent out their Maser Tanks, also known as “Anti-Megalosaurus Units”, to engage the Monster King when he appeared at Tateyama in the midst of a raging typhoon, but they had little to no effect. Godzilla quickly destroyed all opposing forces and continued further inland toward Tateyama, utterly destroying the city before returning to the ocean depths for another three years. After the “Anti-Megalosaurus Units” failed against Godzilla, the Prime Minister of Japan at the time, Machiko Tsuge, called upon science minister Hayato Igarashi to create a weapon that could protect Japan from future attacks by Godzilla. During the next three years, Mr. Igarashi, who becomes Prime Minister, and his men worked on a large robotic monster to defend Japan. This robotic kaiju, named Kiryu and given the nickname of MechaGodzilla, would be the island nation’s best hope of defeating the King of the Monsters once and for all. The robot could be controlled by remote control or from within MechaGodzilla itself and would contain the bones of the original Godzilla that attacked in 1954 within his robotic body. Mr. Igarashi had the bones recovered from the bottom of Tokyo Bay and hired Dr. Tokumitsu Yahara to extract DNA from the skeleton as it was built into the robot. This DNA would be placed into a bio-computer within MechaGodzilla, giving the giant robot the ability to almost act like a living thing. However, soon after the robotic kaiju is completed, Godzilla surfaces along the Kawasaki coast and MechaGodzilla is immediately dispatched. MechaGodzilla quickly unloads its payload of missiles and beam weapons at Godzilla as the Monster King bellows in defiance at his new enemy. Meanwhile Akane Yashiro, a soldier who was almost killed by Godzilla in 1999, pilots MechaGodzilla from one of two Shirasagi super jets that carry the robotic kaiju through the air. She readies the robotic kaiju’s greatest weapons, the Absolute Zero Cannon, and prepares to fire it at Godzilla, but MechaGodzilla won’t obey and Godzilla escapes back into the ocean. Akane tries to regain control of MechaGodzilla, but it is no use, it seems that Godzilla’s roar induced a flashback of Godzilla’s 1954 attack on Tokyo within the DNA of the bio-computer and MechaGodzilla actually becomes the first Godzilla and lays waste to everything in site. About an hour later, MechaGodzilla’s power finally runs out and the robotic kaiju goes offline as the sun sets on downtown Tokyo. Then, after retrieving the powerless robot, Dr. Yahara reprograms MechaGodzilla so it will hopefully not go berserk ever again. Godzilla soon reappeared in Tokyo and began his assault on the city, but the reprogrammed and repaired MechaGodzilla soon flies in and the two kaiju engage in a fierce battle. Toward the end of the battle, the pilot of one of the super jets dive-bombs Godzilla, but the Monster King catches the jet in his mouth. Akane, now piloting MechaGodzilla from within, powers up the Absolute Zero Cannon and flies at Godzilla, grabbing him and knocking the super jet from his jaws. MechaGodzilla then proceeds to carry Godzilla out to sea and detonates the Absolute Zero Cannon as both kaiju slam into the ocean. The water surrounding the two monster’s splashdown area instantly freezes solid and an eerie calmness fills the air. Then, the ice suddenly cracks open and Godzilla emerges, a large scar covering his chest from where the Absolute Zero Cannon detonated and froze his G-Cells. Roaring victoriously despite his wound, Godzilla swims away, leaving his damaged opponent behind. After Godzilla departs, a severely damaged MechaGodzilla rises to the surface, but doesn’t have enough power to pursue the King of the Monsters. Back in Japan, Prime Minister Igarashi congratulates everyone on a successful effort to combat Godzilla while Akane stands on MechaGodzilla, watching Godzilla disappear into the distance. Akane later declares that the battle between Godzilla and MechaGodzilla was a draw and that MechaGodzilla will get its rematch soon.

One year after Godzilla and MechaGodzilla battled to a draw; MechaGodzilla is still under going repairs in the maintenance dock of the J.X.S.D.F base in Hachioji. In the battle with Godzilla, the robotic kaiju’s Absolute Zero Cannon was severely damaged, as well as his right arm. It is soon revealed that a diamond of immense size would be needed to power the Absolute Zero Cannon, or else it would never be functional again. In light of this, the Absolute Zero Cannon is replaced with the Triple Hyper Maser Cannon and MechaGodzilla’s right arm is also replaced and now has the ability to transform into a drill. These repairs are made just in time, for Godzilla soon appears off the coast of Japan, heading for Tokyo. The J.X.S.D.F. sends out their sea forces to try and alter Godzilla’s course, but they fail. Godzilla lands in Tokyo and is engaged by dozens of armored J.X.S.D.F. units, but easily dispatches them and marches onto Tokyo. However, Mothra soon arrives and attacks Godzilla. The two monsters battle fiercely until Godzilla manages to take down the adult Mothra with his radioactive heat ray and is just about to finish her off when MechaGodzilla arrives, transported to the battle by the Shirasagi transport jets, and engages Godzilla in battle, saving Mothra. MechaGodzilla and Godzilla battle back and forth until the Monster King blasts MechaGodzilla in the face with his radioactive heat ray, partially blowing away the right side of MechaGodzilla's head armor, exposing the inner mechanical parts and knocking a circuit out of order so MechaGodzilla can’t operate. At the same time, two newly hatched Mothra larva arrive at the battle and attack Godzilla with their silk webbing, distracting the King of the Monsters and drawing him away from MechaGodzilla with the help of the Shirasagi transport jets. Meanwhile, MechaGodzilla’s circuit is repaired by Yoshito Chujo just in time to save the two Mothra larva, who have been cornered by Godzilla. However, Yoshito becomes trapped inside MechaGodzilla thanks to a misfire of Godzilla’s heat ray. Godzilla and MechaGodzilla begin to go at it once again, battling back and forth until MechaGodzilla attacks Godzilla with his newly designed right arm, drilling right into Godzilla’s scarred chest. MechaGodzilla then blasts Godzilla in the chest with his Triple Hyper Maser Cannon, but then, suddenly happens in MechaGodzilla’s mechanical brain. Pictures of a mushroom cloud, Godzilla in a burning Tokyo in 1954, the Oxygen Destroyer, Godzilla dying in 1954, MechaGodzilla running amok a year ago, MechaGodzilla in front of the sunset, and MechaGodzilla battling with Godzilla… the memories of the original Godzilla. As MechaGodzilla stands still next to the wounded Godzilla, the Mothra larvas begin to spray silk webbing all over the Monster King’s body, but Godzilla is weak and unable to fight back, eventually falling to the ground. With Godzilla now immobile, MechaGodzilla is ordered to fire his Triple Hyper Maser Cannon, but the robotic kaiju does not respond. Then, as the sun rises, the red lines under MechaGodzilla’s eyes begins to glow and the robotic kaiju roars like the real Godzilla as he begins to move toward the fallen King of the Monsters. MechaGodzilla walks close to Godzilla, grabs him, and takes off into the morning sky, with Yoshito Chujo still trapped inside. However, Yoshito is saved by one of the Shirasagi transport jets as MechaGodzilla, with Godzilla in tow, crashes through the ocean’s surface. MechaGodzilla roars and his eyes light up for the last time before the energy supply is shut off internally and both monsters sink to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.
