When director Noriaki Yuasa began to think of ideas of how Gamera should look for his first film “Gamera: The Invincible”, he wanted to give him a look that would appeal to children. He seems to have succeeded, since Gamera has appeared in so many sequels and gained a large fan base all over the world. Gamera sports big beady eyes, five fingers/claws on each hand/foot, tusks that jut out from his lower jaw, sharp teeth, a long tail, a shell that sort of resembles the outside of a pineapple, and dark, textured skin. Thanks to the shell of the suit, the actor within had a hard time walking on two legs, making it look a bit awkward when he walked. Throughout his Showa series of films, up to “Super Monster Gamera”, Gamera went through very few changes, which were mostly to the eyes, teeth, and hands.
