Synopsis
This game doesn’t really have much of a synopsis (at least as far as I can tell, seeing how it was never released in the United States). This game contains both a map and fight mode, kind of like Super Godzilla for the SNES without the whole animated fight thing and there are four stages in all. Basically what you do is either choose to play as Godzilla and his allies - Anguirus and Fire Rodan, rampaging through four stages of game play, you’re ultimate goal to destroy G-Force Headquarters in order to beat the level. Along the way you will have side missions, like having to also contend with enemy monsters in stages one and four (King Ghidorah, Gigan, and SpaceGodzilla) as well as trying to rescue Baby Godzilla in stage three. You are able to regenerate Godzilla’s lost health if it is lost in battle by destroying nuclear power plants and can earn extra points by destroying the smaller G-Force bases and hangers where the robotic kaiju are made as well (then you won’t have to fight them). The other nice thing about playing on Godzilla’s side is that if Fire Rodan is destroyed in stage three, you will receive a dose of energy from him and become super-charged (just like in Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla II). However, you will be in this state in stage four whether the mutated pteranodon is killed or not. Now you also have the choice of playing as G-Force, you’re goal is to kill Godzilla in order to beat a level and advance to another. You will also have to battle with the likes of King Ghidorah, Gigan, and SpaceGodzilla, but if you kill Godzilla, you’ll win automatically. Playing as G-Force might be a little boring at first, seeing as you only get to play as the tanks, jets, maser cannons, etc, but later in the game you will be able to use kaiju like Mecha-King Ghidorah, MechaGodzilla, MOGERA, Super X, Super X-2, and even Mothra. Another interesting thing about this game is that you are able to combine MechaGodzilla and Garuda to make Super MechaGodzilla. You can also regenerate lost health to your machines by parking them at any G-Force location on the map.
Controls
In map mode (playing as Godzilla), you guide Godzilla, Anguirus, and Fire Rodan through the landscapes, destroying buildings and trees and battling G-Force machines or enemy kaiju as they come to you. To do this, just press A or B on the kaiju you want to move and move them a certain distance, you can only go so far in one turn. This also goes for you if playing as G-Force too, except you’ll have to go around buildings, etc if you’re a ground unit, helicopters and jets just fly right over. Now in fight mode, you and you’re enemy will both have a health bar and an energy bar. Fighting is basically like in any fighting game (Mortal Kombat for example, but not as complex). A and B will allow your monster to punch or kick, A + B will allow you’re monster to use his special weapon (watch the energy bar), pressing up makes you’re kaiju jump, and so on. This applies to all kaiju in the game as well as the Super X, Super X-2, and Garuda. G-Force machines like the tanks, jets, etc will simply shoot their weapons at the kaiju when you press A and B, they have no special weapon, but you can move them around in order to try and avoid the kaiju’s attack.
My Opinion
This game really didn’t look like much when I first started playing it, but once I got the hang of the game, it was a lot of fun. Playing on Godzilla’s side was fun for me because I also got to play as my other two favorite kaiju, Anguirus and Rodan (technically its Fire Rodan). Playing on the G-Force team wasn’t as fun on the first level, but once you get to the second, third, and fourth levels, you get to play as kaiju like MechaGodzilla, MOGERA, Mothra, and Mecha-King Ghidorah. This game really paid attention to detail on what happened in the Godzilla series as well, which made it all the more fun to play. The fight and map modes were very well done as well, very detailed for a Game Gear game. I’d definitely recommend this game, you just have to find it!
