| This film is an old favorite of mine, being one of the first giant monster films I ever saw after Godzilla: King of the Monsters. One of the only ones I saw actually, heh, cause back then all my local rental store had was Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Rodan, Mothra, Mothra vs. Godzilla, Godzilla 1985, and Gorgo. One of the first Godzilla wannabes, Gorgo is still a pretty cool film and even had its turn on Mystery Science Theater 3000. Well anyway, onto the synopsis... | |

| Captain Joe Ryan and his friend Sam Slade are salvage engineers sailing off the coast of Ireland looking for treasure. One night, while diving on a wreck, the sea suddenly begins to bubble and heave around them due to an erupting undersea volcano and seriously damages their ship, forcing them to dock at a small Irish town on Nara Island for repairs. There, the two men encounter both unfriendly islanders and a large sea monster, which emerged from the volcanic eruption that comes ashore that night and wreaks havoc on the town. The townspeople fight back by throwing lit torches at the monster and using rifles, confusing it and eventually driving it back out to sea. The next day, McCartin, the island's harbormaster, hires Joe and Sam to get rid of the monster in return for some gold coins the two men quickly formulate a plan. Joe is sent down underwater in a one-man diving bell to try and locate the monster acting as bait, and the creature quickly attacks the bell! The people on the surface act quickly and cast a net into the ocean, trapping the monster and hauling it to the surface. Now with the monster captured, Joe and Sam make their way to London with it, even though it kills several crewmembers along the way. Along the way they discover that a young boy from Nara Island named Sean has stowed away, intent on protecting the monster. Once they arrive in London, Gorgo (name based on the gorgon, a creature from Greek mythology), as the creature comes to be known, is sold to Dorkin’s Circus, being paraded around the great city before being placed into a large holding pen at the circus. Meanwhile, back at Nara Island, another sea monster of the same species only much larger appears and destroys everything in sight. The "Mother Gorgo" then returns to the sea and heads for London. Back in London, the young Gorgo has been put on display and pestered by circus goers, but soon Mother Gorgo arrives to save her child from the evil humans, smashing her way through the city and destroying several famous landmarks. Finally reaching Dorkin’s Cirus, Mother Gorgo frees her child and then both monsters make their way back to the sea, never to be seen again. | |
