Mini Biography
Born in Kamakura City, Japan on August 12, 1926, Hiroshi Koizumi was discovered in a 1951 talent contest run by Toho Studios and signed to a contract with the studio, his only previous on-camera experience being that of a television announcer at a local Japanese TV station. After being hired by Toho, Koizumi made his acting debut in 1952 as the main character in a movie called The Man Who Went to Sea. From 1952 until 1955, Koizumi played numerous roles as a “cool guy” in both movies and on television, but in 1955, he joined Toho's science fiction films and entered the Godzilla series. He starred as pilot Shoichi Tsukioka in Godzilla's first sequel, Godzilla Raids Again. After Godzilla Raids Again, Hiroshi Koizumi seemed to find his niche in sci-fi films and continued to star in them for many years to come, usually portraying doctors, professors, and scientists. Koizumi starred in such great Toho sci-fi films as Mothra (1961), Attack of the Mushroom people (1963), Atragon (1963), Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964), Ghidorah: The Three-Headed Monster (1964), Dogora: The Space Monster (1964), Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla (1974), and The Return of Godzilla (1984), also starring in Toho drama pictures during this time. After 1984’s The Return of Godzilla, Koizumi pretty much retired from movie acting, however, in the 1990s, Koizumi worked on a few films as a producer, including Genesis Survivor Gaiarth (1992) and Tetsuo II: Body Hammer (1992) as well as starring as the host of the popular, long-running game show "Quiz Grand Prix." Hiroshi Koizumi returned to the Godzilla series in 2003's Godzilla, Mothra, MechaGodzilla: Tokyo S.O.S., in which he reprised his role as Dr. Chujo Nakazo from Mothra (1961).
