The Mangled Skyscraper Award was created in 1999 by Gene Rizzardi, a member of the team of experts who worked on Godzilla 1998 (he didn’t like GINO’s look either). The award is given annually at G-Fest to people for their contributions to giant monster films. The award's design is incredibly detailed and looks just like a tower of rubble left in Godzilla’s wake. This mini-page is to tell you about the people who have won this award.

1999 winner - Forry Ackerman
Forry Ackerman was the first recipient of this award at G-Fest`1999. Mr. Ackerman was part of First Fandom, the original group of science fiction fans who met through letters and fan columns of pulp magazines. He also went on to hold the first American science fiction convention in New York in 1938 and the first World Science Fiction Convention in 1939. In 1958, Mr. Ackerman launched “Famous Monsters of Filmland”, a magazine that brought horror and sci-fi film fans together for the first time. The magazine was also the first time many U.S. sci-fi fans could read about Godzilla creators, Tomoyuki Tanaka, Inshiro Honda, Eiji Tsuburaya, Akira Ifukube, and everyone else involved in the Japanese movie monster industry.
2000 winner - Koichi Kawakita
Koichi Kawakita was the second person to receive the Mangled Skyscraper Award at G-Fest`2000. Mr. Kawakita was the special effects man for all the Heisei series Godzilla films (Godzilla vs. Biollante – Godzilla vs. Destroyah) and the Mothra trilogy that came thereafter. He was also the man who came up with the ideas for Battra, Baby Godzilla, Fire Rodan, Little Godzilla, SpaceGodzilla, Destroyah, and Godzilla Junior. He also was the influential force in bringing an updated Mogera to the big screen for Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla instead of reusing MechaGodzilla. Mr. Kawakita is one of the best special effects directors Godzilla, and probably Japan, has ever had. His special effects were and still are world-renowned and he has earned many awards in Japan and he was more than happy to add the Mangled Skyscraper Award to his collection.
2001 winner - Greg Shoemaker
Greg Shoemaker was the third person to receive the Mangled Skyscraper Award at G-Fest`2001. He received it due to his groundbreaking work on the Japanese Fantasy Film Journal or simply JFFJ.
2002 winners - J.D. Lees & Stan Hyde
At G-Fest`2002 both J.D. Lees and Stan Hyde awarded each other the Mangled Skyscraper Award. They gave it to one another in a show of appriciation for what they had done for the fandom and out of friendship.
2003 winner - Noriaki Yuasa
At G-Fest`2003 aka G-Fest X, Showa Gamera director Noriaki Yuasa was given the Mangled Skyscraper Award in honor of his contribution to kaijudom all those years ago when he introduced Gamera to the world. Mr. Yuasa directed all but one of the Showa Gamera films, that film being Gamera vs. Barugon, in which he directed the special effects. Mr. Yuasa was very pleased to receive the award from his fans.
2004 winner - Teruyoshi Nakano
At G-Fest`2004, otherwise known as G-Fest XI, Special Effects director Teruyoshi Nakano was presented with the Mangled Skyscraper Award for his contributions to Japanese special effects films. Mr. Nakano worked on several of Godzilla's Showa-series films as assistant sfx director to Eiji Tsuburaya, but after Mr. Tsuburaya's passing, Mr. Nakano took over as special effects director on Godzilla's films from "Godzilla vs. Hedorah" through "The Return of Godzilla".
