| This was the last of Toho's Mothra trilogy and in my opinion, the worst. King Ghidorah was used yet again and children were involved heavily, not exactly the kind of film for an adult male to watch and be entertained by. The only high point of the film, in my opinion, was the actual Grand King Ghidorah costume, which was just beautiful and some of Shinichi Wakasa's best work. Onto the synopsis... | |

On Infant Island in 1998, Belvera has snuck onto the island in order to steal the secret power of her ancestor Elias, the Elias Triangle. However, Moll and Lora soon enter to discover her stealing the triangle and as she tries to flee on Garu-Garu III, Fairy Mothra knocks two of the three triangles out of her hand. Moll and Lora pick them up and soon discover that the small triangles fit into slots on their swords, increasing their strength. Meanwhile Shota, a local Japanese boy, and his family are at home eating a meal when their father announces that there is a meteor shower outside. However, in the morning it is discovered that a giant meteorite has landed near Katsuyama City. Shota decides to skip school and check out this giant rock from space, but at the same time, school children on playgrounds and around the city begin to mysteriously vanish as a huge shadow passes overhead. Knowing about the meteor shower, Moll and Lora decide to investigate the crashed meteor, only to discover that the evil Grand King Ghidorah has returned to Earth after attacking it millions of years ago. Grand King Ghidorah has returned to capture children, transport them to an organic dome, and feast upon their life force at a later time.
Curious about the arrival of this new evil, Belvera and Garu-Garu III decide to investigate the dome, only to be drawn inside and trapped with the children. At the same time Moll and Lora, atop Fairy Mothra, get too close to Grand King Ghidorah and Lora becomes infected with the three-headed monster’s evil, attacking Moll and causing Fairy Mothra to plummet from the sky. However, Fairy Mothra quickly saving Moll, but Lora becomes trapped within the space kaiju’s dome, where she battles Belvera amidst the growing population of terrified children. Rainbow Mothra also arrives around this time and after a brief battle is defeated by the more powerful space monster and retreats. Meanwhile, Moll and Fairy Mothra run into Shota and explain to him the evil of Grand King Ghidorah. The three then rush to the recovering Rainbow Mothra and Moll speaks to him telepathically, in doing this they develop a plan. Rainbow Mothra is not strong enough to defeat Grand King Ghidorah in his current form, so the giant moth must travel back in time to when the three-headed monster was younger and attacked the Earth for the first time to feed on its life force, back in the age of the dinosaurs. Moll then uses all of her power to help Rainbow Mothra travel through time and collapses, but before she fades away, she begs Shota to enter the dome to find Lora and give her the sword she has. Sixty-five million years in the past, Rainbow Mothra emerges through a ripple in time and engages the young Grand King Ghidorah, dubbed Cretaceous King Ghidorah, in battle. The two kaiju battle back and forth, both taking heavy damage, but Rainbow Mothra eventually manages to immobilize Cretaceous King Ghidorah long enough to pick it up and drop it into the then-active and volcanic Mount Fuji, but not before a piece of Cretaceous King Ghidorah's tail, severed during the battle, burrows itself into the ground. Rainbow Mothra is then thrown from the exploding volcano and lies on the ground, mortally wounded. Suddenly, three Prehistoric Mothra larvas emerges from the surrounding forest and cocoon the dying Rainbow Mothra in a healing capsule that revitalized him and kept him safe over time until the year 1998. Meanwhile, in the future, Grand King Ghidorah and the large dome both suddenly disappear and it looks like Rainbow Mothra has triumphed. The children are released and Shota finds Belvera and Lora, who has recovered from Grand King Ghidorah’s evil infection, as they gather near Moll’s body. However, the celebration is short lived as Grand King Ghidorah reappears in the sky. Having grown from the severed tail of Cretaceous King Ghidorah over the millions of years, his new adult Grand King Ghidorah instantly begins re-capturing the children, but suddenly the healing capsule holding Rainbow Mothra emerges from a nearby mountain and out comes Armor Mothra, Mothra Leo’s latest version covered in a metallic armor. Armor Mothra wastes little time and attacks Grand King Ghidorah, beginning another battle that Armor Mothra wins with ease thanks to its new abilities, totally destroying Grand King Ghidorah. Armor Mothra then telepathically communicates with Lora and Belvera, telling them that the three Elias swords combined create the power of the Elias Triangle. Using this power, they bring Moll back to life, but then Belvera calls Garu-Garu III and the two fly off, promising to return again someday. Then, Armor Mothra removes his armor and transforms into his final form, Eternal Mothra, before flying back home to Infant Island, having once again saved the world. |
