| Katsumi Tezuka's film career in the Godzilla series began at the same time Haruo Nakajima's did. Both men starred in the first film, "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" as the Monster King himself, taking turns putting on the suit for scenes. From that point on, Mr. Tezuka would continue to play kaiju in the Godzilla series until 1964. Playing the likes of Anguirus in Godzilla Raids Again (1955) and again sharing the role of Godzilla with Haruo Nakajima in King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962). He then played Mothra Larva in both Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964) and Ghidorah: The Three-Headed Monster (1964). He also played several roles outside the Godzilla series. During his ten year-long kaiju career, he suffered many bumps and bruises at the laytex hands of the suits he wore. While filming the water climax for Godzilla in 1954, a live electrical cable fell into the water while Mr. Tezuka was rising out of the water. No harm came to the actor, but it was a big scare for everyone. Then, while portraying Anguirus in 1955, he crashed into Osaka castle and fell into the moat around the model building, nearly drowning. While filming the scene where Godzilla and King Kong fall into the ocean at the end of King Kong vs. Godzilla, Tezuka, in the Godzilla suit almost drowned while Shoichi Hirose, in the Kong suit, hit the bottom of the pool hard and swallowed a lot of water. However, Katsumi Tezuka survived all these incidents and always said he really enjoyed portraying the kaiju. | |
