After Hanna Barbera’s Godzilla cartoon, Godzilla would not appear in animated form in America for some time. However, in 1998, GINO would come to the small screen as a Saturday morning animated sequel to 1998’s America Godzilla movie. Often preferred by fans over the 1998 Tristar remake, “Godzilla: The Series” premiered on the Fox Network on September 12, 1998, kicking off right where the movie left us, viewing GINO’s last egg hatching. However, Nick Tatopoulos discovers the creature as it hatches and becomes covered in the slime contained within the egg, this causes the newborn “Godzilla” to imprint a parental view of Nick in its mind and becomes his protector. Godzilla quickly grows to his adult height and Tatopoulos gathers a team together (later dubbed H.E.A.T.) to research Godzilla and the other monsters who are now popping up all over the planet. When a new monster would pop up, H.E.A.T. would typically move in to investigate it and later call in Godzilla if the creatures became hostile.
Episodes of the show were shown typically in a “monster of the week” type of format, with Godzilla and H.E.A.T. engaging a new monster or human threat each week with the occasionally “more involved” plot. The series lasted on into its second season in the year 2000, but was canceled due to poor ratings and the introduction of new shows to the network on April 22, 2000 with three episodes never even being aired. However, a certain episodes of the show have been released on VHS and DVD and retail for a fair price. |
